The first and most simple step to take to prolong your air conditioner’s life is to change the filter. You should change it whenever it gets dirty. It is also good to check contactors and other electrical; most of them are located inside the condensing unit. The contactor operates the compressor and the contacts get pitted and need to be replaced occasionally. Different manufacturers use different types of contactors so check the manual to find what kind you need.

You’ve probably seen cupolas, but you may not have known what they were called, until now. If you have ever taken a drive in the Midwest, past an old church, public office or barn, you may have spotted cupolas on the top of those buildings. The cupolas are those dome or rectangular shaped areas that stick up from the top of the building.

While they look attractive, sometimes made of copper or painted to complement the rest of the building, cupolas also served an important purpose for the buildings in days of yore, as a source of ventilation. This is the original reason cupolas were created. If you think about your high school physics class, you will remember that heat rises. But, if you have a closed roof in a barn or the church, that rising heat ends up stuck in the building because it has no way to get out. Eventually more heat builds up in the building and before you know it the whole place is a sweatbox. In times before air conditioning, this simple physics fact made conditions very uncomfortable, almost unbearable for people in the church and public buildings, as well as for the livestock in the barns. That’s when someone came up with the bright idea to let that hot air out. But the key was how to accomplish this goal. Just cutting a couple of slats in the roof was not a good solution. Although it would let the heat out, it would also let rain and the elements in.

The cupolas as we know them today started being put on these buildings as a way to alleviate the heat, but instead of just settling for an additional topper to the building, it was realized they could also be attractive and craftsmen began to make them out of decorative metals, or take care in the paint job done on them, to complement the rest of the building, and even add ornate weathervanes to the top to add to their attractive qualities.

Today, we have air conditioning, so you may think there is no need for anyone to have cupolas anymore. This may be the case. You really don’t need a vent in the top of your house if you have an air conditioner going, it may let some of that cold air out. But just because you don’t need the practical side of an item, doesn’t mean you can’t want it for its beauty.

The creators of cupolas realized this and began creating cupolas of metal, wood, stone and even vinyl that do not serve their traditional purpose. These cupolas have no slats or vents. Instead, they are solid pieces that can be put atop your home, public building or church to be an attractive addition to the structure. They will also make your building look a little taller and more distinguished compared to those around it. In order to keep a home heating and cooling system running smoothly, most professionals recommend changing air filters every months. The air filter prevents dust and particles from making their way into the air ducts and being deposited on the inner workings of the air handler. If there were no filter, then massive amounts of dust, dirt, and other irritants would accumulate causing a decrease in efficiency and greatly shortening the life span of the HVAC equipment.

Not changing the filter periodically results in a slow build up of dust in the ducts. Most HVAC systems use multiple user replaceable filters. One filter is always placed at the air return which is located at the air intake or return vent. This filter is almost always easily changed out by the homeowner. The other filter, if present, is usually found behind a panel at or in the air handler itself. This filter can be easily accessed if the air handler is located at ground level inside a garage or utility room. Often times, air handlers are installed in an attic recess above the garage. This last location can prove to be a hassle, but the good news is this particular filter need not be changed every month as the air filter at the return.

Sure, you can usually get parts from your local dealer’s parts department, but usually at a very high price. Whatever happened to affordable repair parts? Let’s face it: in most parts of the US during most of the year, when the A/C goes out in a car, it needs to be fixed. Somehow, unless you lived in the warmest parts of the country, it used to be possible to go without auto A/C quite well, but something must have changed as these days windows fog up much more than they used to when the A/C isn’t on. The answer, as always, is, “it depends.” Getting a remanufactured compressor can save a good deal of money compared to just buying a new compressor. As long as you get a remanufactured unit from a place that uses high quality OEM replacement parts and performs proper testing and quality assurance when rebuilding the compressors, you can indeed save money.

While it’s generally best to replace a worn compressor with a new or remanufactured one, many other parts of an automotive A/C system can be repaired relatively easily. All if takes is a good source of auto A/C parts. Do some research and get to know the companies that specialize in automotive air conditioning parts. You can save yourself a lot of time and money that way.

One thing in particular that you should be aware of is whether you are replacing a new system or tying into an existing system. If you are tying into an existing system, you will want to use the same brand as the older system. Completely replacing your system will require much more labor and be more expensive.

The rule changes if you have high ceilings because it will take more cooling power to maintain a comfortable temperature.

More often than not, it is best to just replace your old system because you will end up saving more money that way. Also, if your HVAC professional is tying into an existing system, the older system’s age will help determine its compatibility with the newer system and this may lead to some problems.

Lastly, it is very useful to know how much open access is available. Once again, this information will help your HVAC professional give you a more precise estimate. This is true because there is less labor involved when there is plenty of access space. During installation your service professional will be required to access the home’s heating and cooling duct system. It helps when there is space to do so.

Before calling your HVAC professional, you may want to try some helpful tips. Common problems are related to the fuse and breaker, the refrigerant, the condenser coils, the drain pipe and the filter. Make sure to check the fuse and breaker, check to see if the refrigerant is low, check to see if the condenser coils are dirty, check to make sure the condenser is clean, check to see if the filter is clean and check to make sure the drainpipe isn’t clogged. You can fix most of these things yourself, but if your refrigerant is low you will need to call in a professional.
