Bangkok ‘ACHCHA HAI’

I have visited Bangkok twice earlier. Well, all official and all within a gap of one and a half months. During my first visit, I was very impressed by the roads, infrastructure, cleanliness and all other stuff which I normally not find in India. I used to ask my Indian colleagues ‘What do they have extra that we don’t have? Why can our India be like this?’ Well the answer was predictable – politicians, corruption, lack of discipline among citizens etc. etc, the answer which is on the tip of finger of any Indian for what he thinks on the prevailing problems in the country.

Why can’t cities of India have sky trains, people who follow traffic rules and wide smoke-free & potholes-free roads? Are we too busy with earning our bread than to think on improving the way we live? My mother use to say to me that to improve the things, the system should improve and we use to end the argument questioning the theory who need to start first, we as individual or the system, hen or the egg kinda stuff!
During my stay here, I have observed the behavior of Indian tourist here. Some try to adapt to the discipline here, which is different from their home town and others try to bring in India to Bangkok! Well, let me not comment whether it is better or worse, because I feel, it is subjective. It suits the way of life here. Little indiscipline, unstructured, living off the edge, brings charge and spark to life, which we Indians cherish. When I visited London, I used to return to my apartment at around 6:30 pm and the neighborhood used to be empty & spooky after another hour. Everybody inside! What the heck! But Bangkok seemed a relief from my London experience.

After the initial days of appreciation for things out here, I started settling down gradually and learn important words of Thai. My Thai colleagues used to ask me how we can speak English words with clarity. I used to give them the ‘gyan’ that on an average any learned Indian speaks three different languages – English, Hindi and his/her mother tongue. That’s why our pronunciation is so good (even though we make grammatical mistakes! I thought).
I used to stay in a area called ‘Sukhumvit’. And the ‘gali’ where actually my service apartment was, is called SOI 11, where ‘SOI’ mean road. This ‘gali’ had a 5 star hotel called Ambassador Hotel, which is famous and is known to all Indians who have visited Bangkok ever. Here comes the interesting revelation of my stay, the Sukhumvit area is also famous for hookers, call boys and girls. The official dignified word for it is ‘Escorts’. I picked up a City Guide booklet at Bangkok airport before entering the city and out of 30 pages in that booklet, 24 pages were just describing the race, figure statistics, specialization in handling varied sexual interests of tourist etc. For those who don’t know, to be an Escort in Bangkok, you need license and therefore it’s official.
When I booked a pre paid taxi from airport and told him to take me to ‘SOI 11’ Sukhumvit, all of them started giving me a mysterious naughty smile, which normally the friends and relatives give to the groom when he enters the room for his first night. One of them said ‘ACHCHA HAI’. My obvious gesture was ‘Good way of greeting!’ and I returned their smile, with an even wider smile. Who the heck knew their smile intended something else! It is a way to lure customer, I came to know later. Gosh..! What I am doing here?
Anyways, my days started rolling out slowly. My normal travel include a 5 minute walk from the apartment to the Sky train station, 5 minutes journey
