Mp3 players, for example, are a major source of hearing damage, especially when people listen to them with in-ear headphones. Such headphones are placed inside the ear canal extremely close to delicate tissues. People also sometimes have jobs that place them in close proximity to noisy machinery. There may not be much that a person can do in that case except to try their hardest to always wear protection over their ears. Another unexpected source of damage also involves heavy machinery but not because of it directly. When people drive a car at high speeds with their windows down, the noise from the wind can be quite deafening. It may be so loud that they won’t even be able to hear when a passenger is screaming at them to slow down. In any case, sources of damage tend to be either enjoyable or mandatory, which makes them very hard to avoid.

But your sense of hearing is important. It allows you to get a better feel for your surroundings and to communicate fluidly with other people. It’s worth it to try to reduce the damage you do to your ears over the years by cultivating good habits. Try lowering the volume on your electronic equipment to reasonable levels. Roll the window up when you drive at high speeds and turn on the air-conditioning. Always wear protection on your ears when you work around heavy machinery. You have been blessed. Think about how blessed you are. Look around you and what do you see? Do you have some great friends and family? Do you have a beloved pet or comfortable home or job? Do you have air conditioning during this hot summer season? What have you been blessed with?

I personally went through a natural disaster where I lost every belonging I had. It was at that moment that I truly felt blessed despite the disaster. I have a wonderful husband, family, friends, and a ton of support! You don’t have to go through losing all your belongings! Look around you today and find what you are truly blessed with!

4. Take up some hobbies!

What do you enjoy doing? Do you like putting things together? Working on your car? Scrapbooking? Sports? What hobbies do you have that contribute to your happiness? Find time to engage in these activities often!

5. Get active!

What activities that get you up and moving do you enjoy? Do you like to go hiking, play tennis, walk your dog, play with your kids, or go exploring? What activities do you enjoy that will help you increase your physical activity level?

By increasing your social calendar, doing what you love, getting active, and laughing often, you’ll find yourself living a happier life in which you are going to have the time of your life! Get out there and have some fun!

4 Things to Avoid After a Sunburn

By now, even older children are aware that the sun can cause some serious damage to skin. Premature aging, dark spots and skin cancer are some of the results over a lifetime of sun damage. These problems can result even if you’ve never gotten a burn, but sunburns can make the problem worse.

There are also some things you can do that will cause problems, worsening the burn and/or putting you at risk for organ damage. You may have actually done some of these in the past. Here are four things you should not do after a sunburn.

1) Butter: Never put butter on any sort of burn. Sunburns are, in fact a real burn. Putting any oil based unguent on it can seal in the heat, thus causing the burn to continue damaging the skin long after you came in out of the sun.

2) Lidocaine: I shy away from using this sort of treatment due to the short duration of the effects and the probability it will be used again far too soon. While overdosing is not frequent, it can occur and it can be fatal. If sufficient amounts are used, it can cause problems with your heart’s rhythm, your breathing and cause seizures. Coma and death have also been reported, though as I mentioned, this is rare.

3) Popping blisters: Yes, they’re unsightly, they get irritated easily by clothing and getting rid of them is highly desirable. However, if you pop the blister, you can cause an infection and the area has the potential to scar. Let nature take its course. By the same token, don’t use exfoliants. That could cause the same problems.

4) Hot Shower: Adding more heat to a burn is not a good idea. Taking a hot shower won’t prevent the burn from worsening, and in fact could contribute to making it worse. Going back out into the sun is also a bad idea.

There are three levels of burns, though the sun usually only does first and second degree. First degree means the skin is red but not blistered. A headache, low fever and pain are the symptoms. Second degree means that the skin forms blisters. Nausea and vomiting may occur with this sort of burn.

Most of the time, sunburns can be treated at home. A severe burn or symptoms of heat exhaustion/stroke should be seen by the doctor. The very young and the very old should also be seen by a doctor, as they may have more serious difficulties recovering. Home treatment includes these steps:

1) Cool the Burn: A tepid bath or shower is a good place to start, if it is available. You don’t want the water to be ice cold, as that will shock the system and create some nasty complications. One part vinegar with six parts water can be used after the bath or in place of it if that is unavailable. Dip a soft cloth into the solution, wring it out and lay it on the area.

2) Aloe Vera: Unless you are allergic, this is one of the best treatments for a burn. Wait until the burn has been cooled, though it should not seal heat in. You can buy it in gel form, which may be easier on the skin. Make sure it does not have lidocaine or any other chemical topical anesthetic to avoid possible overdose problems. Aloe can be reapplied as needed.

3) Keep Cool: Avoid going out in the sun, and try to stay where it is cool and air conditioned. This is not just for your skin, it’s for your whole body.

4) Pain Relief: Over the counter oral pain relievers may help with the headache and physical pain. If you prefer natural pain relief, willow bark may be helpful. Don’t use it if you are allergic to aspirin, have gout or you are on low dose aspirin therapy.

Sunburns are an uncomfortable part of summer for many people. Knowing what to do and what *not* to do is very important. One more thing to keep in mind. Fluorochemicals are chemicals that contain the element fluorine. They have numerous different applications in a variety of industries. Fluorine is becoming more widely used due to its useful chemical properties. Fluorine is a powerful oxidizing agent. It is the most electronegative of all elements, and readily forms compounds with most elements. In particular, fluorine binds strongly to carbon, forming a very stable covalent bond.Common Uses of FluorochemicalsPerhaps the best-known use of fluorochemicals is seen in the addition of fluoride to drinking water, to help prevent tooth decay. Compounds such as sodium fluoride, and sodium monofluorophosphate also added to toothpastes to achieve a similar effect. In the form of hydrofluoric acid, fluorine has been used to etch glass for several centuries. In fact, the earliest known use of hydrofluoric acid for this purposes dates back to approximately 1670. One notable modern use of hydrofluoric acid in this way is in the etching of glass lightbulbs.Fluorochemicals are also notorious for their use in a wide variety of compounds known as chlorofluorocarbons, or CFCs. For example, dichlorodifluoromethane was once commonly used as a refrigerant in aerosol spray cans, refrigerators, and air conditioning units. However, as the damage CFCs caused to the Earth’s ozone layer became more widely understood, the use of these chemicals has largely been phased out. FluorocarbonsThe replacement of hydrocarbons with fluorocarbons has led to a variety of different applications. Fluorocarbon based chemicals have been used as anesthetics, refrigerants, propellants, solvents, lubricants, and in water and stain-repellent products.Freon (which contains chlorine in addition to fluorine) has been used widely as refrigerants and propellants. Concerns about long-term pollution have led to the discontinuation of the use of chlorofluorocarbons. Hydrofluorocarbons are used today and are non-reactive with the ozone layer.Fluorocarbons were once widely used as industrial solvents. Due to ozone depletion concerns, some have been phased out; however fluorocarbons are still used for precision cleaning, particulate removal, as carrier fluids, and for other industrial applications.Highly fluorinated fluorocarbon based chemicals are hydrophobic, which allows for excellent water-resistance and stain-repellant properties. Many stain-repellant products once contained chlorofluorocarbons. However, as with many other uses of these compounds, environmental concerns have led to many such products being phased out in favor of new formulas that contain non-reactive fluorocarbons rather than chlorofluorocarbons. The stability and low flammability of some fluorocarbons, such as Teflon, make them highly popular for a wide variety of uses. Perhaps the best known use of Teflon is in the manufacture of non-stick Teflon-coated cookware. The very low friction of this substance, as well as its chemical and thermal stability, makes it useful in any number of moving parts such as bearings, gaskets, and gears. Interestingly, Teflon is such a low-friction compound that it is the only known surface to which a Gecko cannot stick!Other Uses for FluorochemicalsFluorinated compounds are showing considerable promise in the pharmaceutical industry in a wide variety of applications. Fluorochemicals have been tested for antibacterial and antibiotic efficacy, as well as for use as anesthetics, protease inhibitors, and anticancer agents. In the latter case, elemental fluorine reacts with uracil (a molecule involved in DNA replication) to produce a new molecule called 5-fluorouracil, which is toxic to cancer cells.In the agricultural industry, fluorinated compounds are used in insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides. In these types of applications the use of fluorine shows considerable promise. Fluorinated compounds have been shown to be more potent than their non-fluorinated counterparts. This increased potency allows for lower application rates than have previously been used. Fluorine and fluorinated compounds can also be added to dyes. Increased chemical stability of fluorinated compounds improves the fixation yield of dyes, and also increases resistance to color degradation caused by light.The addition of fluorine to compounds used in liquid crystal displays has been found to improve several of the chemical properties important for these types of applications. Adding fluorine improves viscosity, miscibility (the ability of the liquid to form a homogenous solution), and chemical stability of these compounds.Fluorine is also added to compounds called photoresists. These are light-sensitive materials used for several industrial applications, including in photoengraving and photolithography, which are used to form patterned coatings on surfaces.

Sleep Environment

Of course the environment where you sleep matters. If you’re trying to sleep in a house near the airport with planes going over your head, during the light of day, without air conditioning during the sweltering heat of summer…you might have a bit of difficulty.

You have to focus on pleasing the different senses of the body: mainly sight, sound and touch. Obviously smell and taste should not be stimulated while going to sleep:).

In terms of sight, our body produces melatonin when it’s dark. Darkness signals to our body that it’s time to sleep. We can use this to our advantage by going to bed at nighttime, but also by even blocking out any stray light that might still be sneaking in through the blinds or the cracks of the door frame. This is especially relevant for morning light that we don’t want to encounter. You want to make your room completely black, so that you can’t even see your hand when lifted in front of your face. Use your creativity in achieving this scenario.

Temperature…this affects your sense of touch. It should be cool, or the temperature just below lukewarm. This way you feel comfortable, while being not too hot and not too cold. Speaking of comfort, your bed should be very comfortable and supportive. You should feel no strain in any part of your body. If you find yourself tossing and turning to achieve comfort, there’s something off.

In terms of sound, you want it to be as quiet as possible. Ideally, this means complete silence — probably somewhere away from noisy traffic, planes, trains, noisy neighbors/housemates and late night parties. Earplugs can help if silence is not possible. The worst noises are erratic and unpredictable, but you can offset this by creating an ambient sound via a fan or air conditioner. Although these will create noise, the sound will be monotonous and much easier for your brain to adjust to than unpredictable noises.

Techniques When You Can’t Fall Asleep

If you’re lying in bed, tossing and turning, unable to fall asleep, the first thing you need to do is calm down. You can’t “force” sleep. If everything is the way it should be ( i.e. your sleeping environment is ideal and you’ve winded down properly), then you just need to relax, maybe write down any distracting thoughts, accept that you have no control over it and focus on your breathing to allow the sleep to take place.

You can also take naps during the day, but they should be short: between 20 and 30 minutes. Longer naps will actually disrupt your sleep cycles and potentially reduce your energy.

Computer Vision Syndrome

Almost everyone these days is using a computer for work or play. We spend a lot of time staring at our computer screens and many people are experiencing vision related problems. The eyestrain, blurred vision and headaches that often come with computer use are called Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS).

Studies indicate that up to 80% of computer users have vision related problems or CVS. Many computer users do not associate their symptoms with the time they spend on the computer. Some assume that their headaches or eyestrain are from job stress, or that their tired eyes are an expected part of their job. Computer glasses are special glasses designed for your computer environment. They will make your computer time more productive and comfortable.

One of the causes of CVS is due to the nature of text and graphics on a computer screen. The image on a monitor is created with pixels of light, which are glowing dots that are brightest at their center, with their luminance falling to zero towards their edge in a bell-shaped fashion. Print on paper usually has sharp high-contrast edges.

The human visual cortex has special cells that are very good at recognizing high-contrast edges like print on paper. These cells are important to our basic visual perception system, because much of what we see as a “thing” in the natural world is shaped by high-contrast edges. Our eyes can lock onto sharp contrast edges but have a difficult time maintaining exact focus on a pixel-created edge.

When we look at a computer screen, our eyes have to exert muscular effort to focus for that distance and must ideally maintain that effort as long as we are looking at the screen. In fact, what happens is that the focusing effort gradually relaxes and then must be re-focused to the plane of the screen. Over time the muscles fatigue and CVS symptoms become apparent.

Computer Ergonomics:

Lighting in most offices is too bright for comfortable computer use. If you can reduce the lighting somewhat it will help. Watch for glare from doors, windows or reflected glare from surfaces. If you wear glasses when working on the computer they should have an anti-reflection coating on them.
To minimize strain and eyestrain, the monitor should be 20 – 30 inches away from your eyes. You should be looking slightly down at a 15-degree angle. Use an adjustable chair with full back support
In many offices the air is dry due to air conditioning and heaters. When the eyes become dry the vision blurs and the eyes feel irritated. To make it worse, when we stare at a computer our rate of blinking slows, drying the eyes even more. Lubricant eye drops often help.
