“Hot water is the most efficient way to use solar, short of passive solar where you’re using sunlight to warm up tile or stone” says Monique Hanis of the solar Energy Industries Association Trade Group, which represents manufacturers and installers of solar products for electricity, water and other uses.

The cost of installed Solar hot water systems will vary depending upon the volume of heated water required in a home. The water tanks come in 80 and 120 gallon sizes and usually require two or three rooftop solar collector panels per roof. Once installed, the systems can provide up to 75 percent of the demand for heating hot water in a home while replacing or adding on to an existing water heating system. More importantly, because the sun is free, you’re protected from future fuel shortages and price hikes.

Future generations will probably wonder why we focused so much on generating power from petrol fuels when we have practically an endless source of energy available in the sun. This nation has had solar energy technology, in some form or other, since the mid eighteen hundreds. But, the government still is not putting enough effort into supporting and promoting the development and use of solar power.

The United States Solar Energy Technologies Program which will expire in 2011 is funded, but not enough to push us to the front of the line of countries investing in solar energy. The huge downside is that our neglect is letting other countries get ahead of us in what could be a dominant form of energy in the next decade or so.

On the hottest days of the year, you can literally feel the sun’s energy pulsating through your body and warming everything around you. And then, in the evening, the bricks, walls and concrete pavement slowly gives up the heat that it has collected during the day.

In the perfectly developed solar town, a great deal of that energy would be captured and utilized to heat the home, air condition the home, and power the electrical appliances of homes. I think we have all been to offices and buildings where the atmosphere is very sterile and it does not seem very inviting. Surviving Natural Disaster Needn’t Cause Cabin Fever

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) reports that occurrences of natural disasters have increased from less than 50 per year in 1960 to 350 per year in 2000. At least some of them could happen where you live.

In 1972 there was a “100-year flood” in western South Dakota, meaning that a flood of such intensity in that location only happens every hundred years. Most areas have some disaster that is supposed to happen only infrequently like this. However, with the increase mentioned above, a “100-year flood” could become a “13-year flood.”

There were only 10 category 4 or 5 hurricanes recorded from 1900 to 1955. But from 1950 to 2005, 25 of these intense hurricanes were recorded.

In disasters such as an electrical blackout or blizzard, the wisest course of action is to stay inside. In some disasters you may be instructed to “shelter in place.” This means something has happened that makes it dangerous to go outside; it is safer to stay inside (e.g., chemical accident or attack, ash in the air from volcanic explosion). The “shelter in place” direction is telling you to make an air-tight shelter out of the place you are in (or that you can get to most quickly).

You should take steps now to prepare your home for a “shelter in place.” Prepare for the worst; assume that you will face a disaster that involves airborne chemical agents.

Find out when warning systems are to be tested in your area; then listen to be sure you can hear them. (Although it is beyond the scope this article, you need to develop and practice a family emergency plan.)

Choose an above-ground room with as few windows as possible, and access to a bathroom—such as a master bedroom. Be sure there is a land-line phone accessible in the room (equipment for either land-line or cellular service may be overwhelmed or damaged during an emergency, so having both is important).

Buy duct tape and 2.4-mil plastic sheeting. Cut the sheeting into pieces 6″ wider and taller than each door, window, fan, and vent in the room. Label each piece. Put these pieces of sheeting, a battery-powered or crank-up radio, extra batteries, food and water, towels and blankets into a box. Include supplies for entertainment of children (and adults!). Store it in this room.

In the event of a disaster
1. Get everyone in the house or yard (including pets) into the room as quickly as possible.
2. Lock all house windows and exterior doors.
3. Close window shades/blinds/curtains if there is danger of explosion.
4. Turn off all fans and the heating and air conditioning systems; close all fireplace dampers.
5. Close the door of your safe-room, and duct tape the plastic over doors/windows/etc. Tape the corners first, and then tape along the edges.
6. Continue listening to your radio until you hear “all is safe,” or a message that tells you to evacuate. In some disasters, evacuation of areas at most risk may be called for.

Then have fun—with preparation and imagination, turn this disaster into a “family sleepover.”

Cincinnati School’s has in effect a long term $1 billion building project that will help to renovate and rebuild many of its older buildings. One Cincinnati School ‘s elementary school, Pleasant Ridge Elementary School, has been recently featured in District Administration. This national magazine focuses on issues in K-12 education. The article from the August issue discusses the growing concern and interest in green building and environmentally friendly construction. The article states that even though the upfront cost can be more the long term benefits of green construction are quite clear. The construction of Cincinnati Schools’ Pleasant Ridge Elementary School is not only a gain for green construction strategies but it also teaches the students important lessons about the environment and responsibility.

Cincinnati Schools’ Pleasant Ridge Elementary School will be the first LEED School in Cincinnati Schools upon its completion. The LEED Green Building Rating System was devised by the U.S. Green Building Council which has helped Cincinnati Schools write its new building plans and codes. The article refers to the work of Ginny Frazier as one of the major influences on the Pleasant Ridge Elementary School project. A private citizen who lives in the area, Frazier is the head of a local group that advocates environmentally friendly building. She went to the Cincinnati Schools’ authorities and administrators with proposals on how the school in her neighborhood could be rebuilt using green materials and environmentally friendly tactics. Some of the ideas she proposed included according to the article, “geothermal heating so the new building uses the earth’s temperature for cooling and heating, using natural building materials, noxious-free cleaning products and art supplies, as well as natural water filtration systems.”

The article discusses the five key areas that the Cincinnati Schools’ Pleasant Ridge Elementary School project uses innovative techniques or old-fashioned common sense to improve the building design. The Cincinnati Schools’ Pleasant Ridge Elementary School project will improve the lighting of the schools in several ways. The lights will feature sensors that will automatically turn off lights in unoccupied rooms. Currently Cincinnati’s City Hall is using a similar system that has greatly reduced energy costs. The Cincinnati Schools’ Pleasant Ridge Elementary School will also have photovoltaic panels, which convert solar energy into electricity. Saving energy with heating and cooling systems is also a concern. All the new and renovated Cincinnati Schools will have central air systems. The article states that, “Air conditioned classrooms prevent pollution from outside, and in the end, help asthmatic children breathe easier, he says. And moisture from hot, humid days can also cause ceiling pads to buckle or gym floors to sag”

Another area the article talks about is indoor air pollution. Cincinnati Schools’ Pleasant Ridge Elementary School project is using less carpet in the design in order to help reduce pollutants indoors. Plans for reducing the amount of water use in the Cincinnati Schools’ would also be based on sensors that detect movement around sinks and toilets. The article comments on the concerns that the Cincinnati Schools’ Pleasant Ridge Elementary School project has in this area. The main concern is in using faucets that have an automatic shut off system or a push button system.

Rapid industrial sourcing of raw materials are exhausting the Earth with so fast volumes that within a hundred of years (our grandchildren and great-grandchildren era) will eat plastic food or return to the primitive society due to lack of materials to build, knit, weld, grow etc. The question of natural resources saving has been discussed for a few decades, but our children would not appreciate us much for these discussions memories.

One of the most powerful sources which affect children’s behavior and attitudes is technology. Technological advancements make our life rapid, reasonable and non-emotional. We can do more jobs, study more subjects, access more places and spend less time with our children. More and more children feel abandoned, unneeded and undesired. Their parents do not have enough time to express their love and devotion. The children who follow their parents as the major leaders in unknown world of adults does not have love a as subject in their study program. They do not know that love is the only feeling which can teach how to make friends, create a family and bear children. Technology indeed has a great future – the future without humans.

Self-development is the last but not least aspect greatly affected by modern world. The most affective attempts are made by mass media. If our children would not think they could not give future to their world and their lives because ‘If I think, then I live.’
