The Power of Remaining Calm

Author: Sandy Harper
Source: ezinearticles.com

I was out of town when I received the text from my room-mate/manny, David, just before midnight. He was contacting me with the news that my air conditioner had died…completely. We live in Central Florida, where we have been experiencing temperatures in the 90′s, and even in the low 100′s some days!

My immediate reaction was an expletive spoken under my breath (which I quickly asked forgiveness for). But, then I started “practicing what I preach” in my Gratitude Boot Camp sessions. I took some deep, cleansing breaths and started counting all of my blessings. Then, I said my prayers and drifted off to sleep soundly (instead of tossing and turning and worrying, as I would have done in days past).

The next day, I did not allow myself to get upset at all about the broken air conditioner, even though it was happening at an inopportune time. Instead, I focused on my blessings; remembered that I grew up in a house with no air in Florida and survived; and took action to find ways to live with the situation for a while, by getting my hands on some oscillating fans to use temporarily. I went about my day in a calm way, knowing that “this too shall pass”.

As I was driving home, I kept my thoughts on all of the good things going on in my life, not allowing any negative statements to enter my brain, not even for a minute! When we arrived home, I explained to my almost-four year old son, Jake, that he was only gonna sleep in a light shirt, instead of his jammies and socks, for a while. I started walking towards the stairs to put him to bed. I felt completely at ease with our situation and was ready to let the hot night take me back to happy, childhood memories.

As I was passing by the closet that holds the breaker box for my house, I stopped to check it even though David had already done so. The breaker for the air conditioner appeared to be lined up with all of the rest, but I flipped it off and back on any way. It was music to my ears when I heard the air conditioner kick on and Jake squealed with delight when his Mommy started doing a very up-beat happy dance! We danced around and sang our new “Mommy and Jake are Grateful for Air Conditioning” song for quite a while before we went up to his bedroom. It was fun!!!

I woke up feeling extra grateful and happy today. David is perplexed. Jake is well-rested. And, I am feeling the powerful sense of accomplishment that comes with remaining calm during a crises.

Resolve, right now, that you will remain calm the next time an unexpected challenge arises in your life. It is powerful.

Refresh Your Mind and Body on Command

Author: Diane Neuman
Source: ezinearticles.com

Why should you, an experienced breather, invest your limited time, money, and energy in the study of mindful breathing? The movement of your breath, thus far, seems to have been as dependable, as automatic, as the arc of the sun and the flow of the tides. You have been free to deal with more vexing problems-unclog the sink, balance the checkbook, take the cat to be neutered, wrestle with the crabgrass. Why tamper with a process that isn’t demanding your attention?

Your breath is your life. Without it, your brain, your heart, your fingers and toes, your dreams, all that is physically and mentally you, would fade away in about the length of time it takes to eat an ice cream cone.

The good news is that you already breathe beautifully WHEN YOU SLEEP. You take in the most oxygen while investing the least amount of work to get it. Your deep quiet natural breathing during sleep clears your mind, scrubs your lungs and relaxes all the exhausted daytime muscles of vision and voice. You don’t have to enroll in a college course or read a complicated manual or take expensive lessons. Some part of your mind already knows how to do this.

Notice how the rhythm and placement of the air changes as you watch someone drifting off to sleep. You know precisely when that person is asleep by the fact that their breathing is more audible and that you can see their belly expand with each inhalation.

Mother Nature takes control of your breathing when you sleep, allowing for maximum rehabilitation of your mind and body. Sleep deprivation is one of the most effective (and therefore unforgivable) ways to break a person’s body and spirit. Part of that destruction is the interference with Nature’s plan to refresh you with eight hours of efficient and effective breathing in each 24-hour period.

As your day progresses and the challenges hit you like a tsunami, it is understandable that the tension mounts. Rising tension begins to interfere with your posture, your breathing, your circulation and your concentration. Our species has an amazing ability to adapt but evolution moves forward in slow deliberate steps and it will take many thousands of years before we are able to deal naturally with computer screens, artificial light, chairs (even ergonomically correct ones), air conditioning and endless hours at a desk without paying a terrible price.

You cannot wait for evolution to catch up with the demands dumped on you today.
The next time your day turns really nasty, borrow from Mother Nature’s nighttime plan:

1. Sit with your weight evenly distributed along the backs of your thighs (tailbone off the chair). Close your eyes.

2. Relax your shoulders, your throat, and your tongue and jaw muscles.

3. Breathe out all the stale and used-up air.

4. Imagine that you have a small balloon behind your bellybutton. Fill it gently with each incoming breath. Your abdomen will swell as the breath comes in and flatten as you exhale.

Proper breathing is incredibly powerful. It is rather like re-booting your computer, giving you a fresh start in the middle of your hectic day.

A List Of Inventions I’m Waiting For

Author: Steve Gillman
Source: articledashboard.com

This is a personal list of inventions I am waiting to see produced. Make them real and you’ll have at least one customer.

1. Air conditioned jacket. I noticed one hot day that the fan didn’t cool me nearly as well when I was shirt-less as when I wore a jacket or shirt and let the fan blow into it. This directed the cooling breeze all around my torso and arms (the air escapes out the bottom, collar and sleeves). A jacket with a small battery-operated fan would do the same thing. Wear a wet t-shirt underneath and the circulating air would make it downright chilly in there.

2. A money sanitizer. Viruses and more are spread by the handling of bills. A simple machine, using either heat or a disinfecting agent, could make those bills safe to handle.

3. Artificial foot soles. Hikers and backpackers get blisters from friction. Feet slide and move in shoes and get “hot spots” that become blisters. The solution? Insoles that are glued to the bottom of your feet. These might be made of felt or some other material. This product would need a solvent for easy removal. Perhaps they could be reused, gluing and removing them repeatedly, like dentures are used.

4. Morbid soda. There are those who like the darker side of things. Why not have soft drinks with plastic animal embryos in them? Make them too large to come out of the bottle, to prevent choking.

5. Fully padded snow sleds. Sledding can be painful and dangerous. The solution may be to fully pad a sled, and provide some kind of safety harness, so even after flipping over the rider can remain uninjured.

6. Television goggles. We put headphones on to listen to music wherever we go. Why not have goggles that have a television screen inside them?

7. Insult toilet paper. Who do you want to use and flush down the toilet? Politicians would probably be well represented on the list of faces printed on this toilet paper.

8. Tiny poetry books. These mini-books would be ideal for attaching to bottles of wine, as a romantic novelty. They could also be sold with bouquets of roses, and boxes of chocolates.

9. Kites for boats. Sail boats are complicated, with their masts, booms, and keels. What if you want a simple way to propel your canoe or rowboat across that lake, using the wind? A large kite could be the answer. Make it like a para-sail, and it would be light to carry and simple to use.

(This is really a partial list of inventions I want to see made. There are many more things I am waiting for, from flying bicycles to in-the-home grocery stores.)

How Napoleon Hill Got Me a Porsche

Author: Nelson Berry
Source: articlecity.com

We all want to improve! But picking the most straightforward, uncomplicated, undemanding, uninvolved and untroublesome way to improve is sometimes discouraging. I should know…

Let me explain and share with you about my personal experience with this merry-go-round enigma and maybe you can relate, or have experienced the same mind-boggler yourself.

I had grown up in a commercialism oriented family. After college, I met a guy who was my age, driving a Porsche, had a nice 3-bedroom condo, beautiful live-in girlfriend in Boulder, CO and didn’t go to college. I thought, “Jeez, I wonder what he does”. I asked him and he told me, “I market highly speculative oil & gas deals.”

This was right around the time of the Kuwait Invasion by Iraq, so oil & gas was a blistering topic in the telecast and around the universe. The price of oil skyrocketed and everyone wanted some of the pipeline. It piqued my interest and I thought I could do it. At least I was ambitious. Actually, I craved what he had. He related, “I’ll get you an interview and call you tomorrow. I’ll help you out to learn how to do this.”

When I got there for an interview, I noticed he wasn’t the only one who had a Porsche in the parking lot, there where Porsches, Monster Trucks, Mercedes, BMWs and then a couple of shoddy cars parked in the back. I didn’t just park in the back, I parked 1/2 block away!

I go in and see well groomed guys and gals walking around with suits. It looked like the inside of a GQ magazine. The smell of cigarettes permeated the air. I could hear all this yelling and racket going on in the background, behind the partition and really wanted to see what was going on back there.

I filled out an overly simple questionnaire in the lobby and was called in for the interview. I walked into the office of the principal (the top guy). He was a big burly guy that was very well groomed, but he seemed to have a nervous twitch on his neck. I remember it was like he kept trying to adjust his tie without his hand.

He invited me to lunch and we scaled into his monster truck and when he fired that thing up, it sounded like a bomb went off in the truck bed!

We went to a place called the Flagstaff House. For those of you who know Boulder, this is “THE” 5-Star eatery in town. The scenery looking over the mountain range and the smell of brisk mountain air and my experience of the day so far was making me think I was getting closer to that Porsche that I coveted. It was nice, but I got the feeling that I was being rushed for a fraternity. After the $200 feast, he explained the indoctrination required and told me to start tomorrow. He didn’t ask, he told me! I’m IN!!!!

Dry cleaning wasn’t an option at that time, so I was up early ironing coat & tie so I could “look” like everyone else. I had these clothes left over from my college days and was used to doing my own ironing. Except I didn’t have an ironing board! But I had a can of starch! I laid down a good clean towel and ironed them on the floor.

I arrived and walked around that partition for the first time…

Have you ever seen the movie “Boiler Room”?

The only difference between this location and an actual boiler room was that they had air conditioning.

The only marketing they had was the phone and boxes of leads from D&B.

The SEC license training was intense. New recruits where expected to spend 12 hours per day on the phone, eat lunch at their desk and make 300 cold calls a day plus do the training classes. I didn’t mind the hard work, I wanted that “Porsche”!

I got my license after about a month and was a full broker. I was off to the races… every little bit of extra money I got was going into more sales training programs.

6 months later… I had financially failed at this job. I was tired and couldn’t figure out why I wasn’t doing better. I had asked around the office, but, in hindsight, one thing I can tell you about most “top salespeople” is that they don’t share their secrets around their office. Except for 1 guy who, after work one day, gave me his copy of “Think & Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill. He wished me luck as sped off in his “Beemer”. I opened it up and saw underlines, highlights, notes in the margins… it looked like a 5th-time hand-me-down college text book. I pondered if this may be the secret. I hadn’t gotten any boost from any of the other guys except the standard training, so I really treasured this gift.

One of the chapters was double underscored and seemed like the pages where worn out more in that chapter than any other. It was the chapter on “Auto-Suggestion”…

“I have never known anyone who was inspired to use the secret, who did not achieve noteworthy success in his chosen calling. I have never known any person to distinguish himself, or to accumulate riches of any consequence, without possession of the secret.” – Napoleon Hill

I applied it immediately and in about 60 days, it was starting…

Now this is 8 months into my new job (my first job AND only commission) and I hadn’t made any meaningful exchanges worth telling you about. My folks where tired of me mooching off of them so this is where the rubber hits the road. Poverty was an understatement! I gave it another 30 days and was offered, or “drawn” to, a job in sales at another place that wasn’t all commission and my sales went through the roof. That was 15 years ago.

At the time, I couldn’t tell if it was the culmination my education, experience & training or if it was Think & Grow Rich that helped flip the switch on. Now I know that it takes both… I also know that it is hard to apply certain types of information, education & training without doing “inside work”, or subconscious work ALSO.

Then I was drawn to subliminal messages. I realized that subliminal messages weren’t yet available back in 1937, so I got with a sound engineer and started making my own.

It a layman’s phenomenon that is clearly explained in this book.

I found that I could apply these same techniques with subliminal messages while I was doing something else and my productivity increased exponentially.

I bet you can too!

What is your “Porsche”? Are you ready?

From Pain To Purpose

Author: Nicole Cleveland
Source: isnare.com

In March 2006 my husband and I celebrated 10 years of marriage. This could not have happened without the Lord, my Pastors and my faith. The faith to start over, faith to be open, faith to be willing to allow the Lord to work through me and use me to help encourage and inspire other women.

On April 28, 2004 I thought I would literally lose my mind. Riding in the back of the ambulance the next day, I knew I would not survive. The situation had the best of me. “Just give up” was the desperate thought that entered my mind. “God is not with you,” the little voice lied. “I thought He would give you your hearts desire.” But surely this was not my true desire.

” Why are you crying” were the words the enemy kept throwing at me. How could the one I love taunt me? As I lay in the emergency room he sat across from me laughing in the midst of my pain and heartache, I felt my world being destroyed. Is this a dream? Did my husband really come home 4 days earlier and say he was leaving? I just gave birth to our third child 5 days prior.

“Why are you crying?”

“Could it be that you just told me you were leaving?” This had to be a dream.

“Whatever Nicole.”

“Whatever? Are you crazy? You are a man of God; this is not biblical! You just don’t decide that you don’t want to be married anymore after 8 yrs. You have children, you have responsibilities!”

“Whatever Nicole.” The dream became a nightmare.

This is what began 8 months of warfare, tears, prayer, teaching and most importantly, learning my purpose.

This is one of my stories. My life is a testimony and God knows that I will share it. The bible says that we are overcome by the power of our testimony.

My prayer is that this story will help just one woman be able to “Breathe Again”. If it helps hundreds or even thousands, that is great. But my mission is to reach that one who is suffering, who is going through what I went through. Sharing my story is also healing for myself. So thank you in advance for reading and also helping me “Breathe Again”.

The words to that famous hymn go a little something like this.

“This is my story, this is my song, I am praising my Savior all the day long.
This is my story, this is my song, I am praising my Savior all the day long”

To be in the church and living “somewhat” right is what I thought it took to keep my home, my marriage and our life together. All we needed was “church”. Boy, was I wrong! It takes a lot more than just “church” to keep it together. It takes a relationship. Not just one person having a relationship with the Lord, but both of us.

I ended up in the back of that ambulance due to hemorrhaging. When all the tests were done the diagnosis was “stress”. Yeah, maybe I was a little stressed out. My husband did just tell me the night before that he was leaving. The doctor prescribed Zoloft (an antidepressant), but I refused to start taking something that I would be dependant on. I made this assertion not knowing that shortly after that I would be dependant on another pill.

My husband was in and out of the house after that night. He was still officially there, but not really there until a few months later. Then I put my foot down.

“You will not do whatever you want to do in this house. My kids will not see you coming in and out as you please. You will not sleep here, go to work, then leave and go sleep at another woman’s house. My son is 14 and I do not want him to think this is ok.”

That is what came out of my mouth but I really wanted to say was,

“I will do what you want, just stay”

” I will accept you being with another woman, just stay!”

I wanted to beg and plead.

“Don’t leave me, don’t leave us, just stay”

As desperate as it may sound, that is what I was willing to do for my marriage, for my kids. I grew up without a father in my home. I didn’t want that for my kids. I didn’t want to sleep around, date, or get to know someone else. When I got married it was for life. We were meant to be together, I didn’t want a divorce. I wanted my husband. But he didn’t want me.

After all how many other women know their husbands are cheating and still stay?

One older woman shared her story with me and said, “Baby – sometime you just have to do what you have to do. My husband cheated on me for more than 30 years and the affair didn’t end until the other woman died. My kids used to come in the house and tell me their father’s car was parked at her house around the corner. I just accepted it. I lived with it for the sake of my family.”

But I could not be a statistic. I had more respect for myself than to allow that to go on. As difficult as it was for me, I knew he had to go.

I made a promise to myself that I would not cry in front of him anymore because that gave him power. Each time I would cry he would laugh. (The enemy would laugh) So I arranged a time to be out the house so he could pick up his things. He called me and said he had them and he was taking them to storage. I hung up.

My chest got tight, my stomach turned, my heart began to race. My knees began to buckle. My hands were shaking uncontrollably. I needed air. I had to get air. He actually took his things. He actually was gone!

“There is not another woman, it’s just me.”

“Do you think I am crazy?”

“Whatever Nicole.”

Those words again. That is what our conversations were like. For a man to be so concerned about his family and then not care how we ate, not care how we paid the mortgage, not care about anything at all concerning his wife and kids, much less the Lord; it was too much for me to handle in the beginning. He changed right before my eyes. Didn’t he know this was wrong? I know he was not raised like this. I tried to understand, I tried to just pray that he would come to his senses, but enough was enough.

It was not a good example for my children and it was awful for me. My mind was slipping each day, I couldn’t eat, couldn’t sleep. I would have panic attacks, my stomach was upset all the time. At the time I was still on maternity leave from my job so all I had was time.

Too much time if you ask me. Time to examine myself inside and out. Why did he leave, what did I do? What didn’t I do? Did I get too fat? Am I ugly? Did I not give him enough sex? Those were things that ate at me day in and day out. Why did I move to Virginia, away from my family to a state where I had no one but him?

This is when my dependency on PM pills began. I took PM pills every single night after he left. I just wanted to sleep this nonsense away. To sleep next to someone for years and then be left to sleep alone was awful. I hated to be in the house by myself. To tell the truth, I was a little scared. Grass was growing, toilets were breaking, the truck sounded like an 18-wheeler, the air conditioning broke and I had to pump my own gas. Those were just a few things that happened initially after he left. It was terrible. I never had to do deal with these things before. I was totally clueless. My husband had spoiled me, and I had to learn how to do many things on my own.

Watching the reactions of my children broke my heart. My daughter would cry for her daddy every night in the beginning. But then she started to pray. I would hear my 6 yr old daughter in her room praying for her daddy to return.

I remember one particular night she came out of her room and said “Mommy, we need to pray for my Daddy because he is in a bad neighborhood and we just need to pray that the devil gets away from him.”

My son was just angry.

People would come to me and say the wrong things all the time.

“I know how you feel.”

“It will get better.”

Those were just some of the maddening things people said to me.

I have found that if you don’t know how a person feels or don’t know what to say just don’t say anything. Sometimes the best thing to say is nothing.

Each day was a battle. Most people didn’t know I was going through anything because I went on with my day-to-day functions. I wore a fake face. A mask. I would summon just enough strength each day to do what needed to be done. I couldn’t be like some and sit around and cry all day; I had three children to take care of, and one was an infant.

They depended on me. They needed me and I needed them. They kept me going. We were all we had as far as family. The days got better as I started to dive into things I enjoyed. I kept busy in the church and other activities. I enrolled the kids in sports.

A busy schedule kept our minds on something other than the fact that we had been abandoned.

Many people thought I should hate him but I couldn’t. I loved him. Not the person that he became, but the man I married. The person he became was mean, rude and just a different creature towards the kids and me. He was not himself. Each time I talked to him it felt like I fought 12 rounds against Tyson. It was exhausting just trying to have a normal conversation with him.

The phone rings at 7am.

“Hey Baby.”

“Good Morning.”

“How you doing?”

” I am good and yourself?”

” Just on my way to work”

“Hey, do me a favor and don’t call me when you are on your way to work – especially after you just got out of the bed with another woman. I am your wife.”

“Whatever Nicole.” That phrase again.

“There is no woman.”

At least 3 times a week my phone would ring at 7am until I refused to answer.

Each night I would come home and scream into the pillow. Each night I would think about dying. I knew the Lord; I would go to heaven, right? At work I would go in the restroom to cry, then splash water on my face and resume my daily responsibilities.

Most people never knew.

My husband and I are back together now but the most important thing is that I found me. I found the lost Nicole that was buried. The Lord allowed me time to work on me. I truly am grateful for who I am and what I had to endure to help others. Often I tell people I went through for you. Not me.

That is why I founded Breathe Again Magazine. Women wear these masks really well, but we are hurting, struggling, crying on the inside. Most people never know. In my struggle I needed to touch someone, identify with someone that knew how I felt, someone that could relate. By using this magazine as a forum to share personal stories of triumph and victories, our mission is to help encourage and motivate just one woman with an article of inspiration.

The quarterly events are to help someone get “A Breath of Fresh Air” even if only for an afternoon, evening or night. To get away from our “to do” list and snatch some time for yourself. You deserve it.

Simple Explanations For Dry Skin

Author: Louise Forrest
Source: isnare.com

Skin is the outer covering of all bodies, animals and humans. Just below are the networks of flesh, arteries and veins, and other organs, which are embedded far more deeply in the flesh. That’s the way nature has built the body, again, animal or human. Even fish have the same, behind their scales. It is a protective mechanism.

This protective mechanism has its own flexibility. You have seen a new born, and children, who have not yet gone to school. How soft and tender their skin are! That’s because they have not been exposed sufficiently to the external environment. As they age, you may not notice it, but if you do have a child at home, or you can see children, you will find that their skin has become just that bit less soft and tighter.

As a person ages, so do the organs, including the skin. This is because the epidermis, as it is called, receives nourishment from oils from within the body, and also from your intake of fluids. In the good old days, our ancestors, used to take an oil bath once in a week. This was because it helped to supplement the oil in the body, and allowed the skin to breathe. Yes, your skin breathes, much the same way you breathe. It is taking out heat, or allowing heat to come through, in summer and winter.

In summer, it requires more fluids, because, in the heat, your body temperature could rise, but the skin sweats, i.e. the water, for want of a medical term, so that when it comes into contact with air, it evaporates, and leaves a cool feeling on your skin. That’s why when you sit down after a jog or a walk outside in the heat, you stand under a fan, and you feel cool immediately.

The same way, if you walk into an air-conditioned room for some time you don’t feel the cool air of the air-conditioner, but after a while you feel better. The skin is doing it for you. And, you do feel thirsty. Your body is asking for more fluids, to replace what it has lost through the skin.

Normally when we bathe, we immediately rub ourselves down, and start dressing. Well, the real way is to not rub yourselves down, but to pat the water on your skin. This does not remove the water on the skin, and the intake through the pores is increased. Similarly, you should not have a real hot water bath. It closes the skin pores, and therefore the intake naturally is less. Use tepid or slightly warm water. And give it about two to three minutes before you PAT yourself down.

Use of a harsh soap also does the same thing. Therefore, change your soap, and/or you can use cream or a good moisturizer and apply it to the skin. Give some to it to be absorbed by the skin. Then dress.

If it were recommended that before you take a bath, use good oil, once a week or twice, and apply it to your body and then rinse it by using a shampoo, you won’t because you are short of time. But that’s the natural way.

Simple Explanations For Dry Skin
